Meet Woodstock Chimes
If the name Gary Kvistad doesn't ring a bell for you, don't worry, because it will. For over 30 years, Gary and his wife, Diane, have been running Woodstock Chimes from their home in Upstate New York. As they're fond of pointing out, chimes are the original wind instrument and have been in use all over the world for thousands of years.
The seed that became Woodstock Chimes was planted in, of all places, a landfill. Just after graduating from college, Gary found a set of discarded aluminum lawn chair tubes that he fashioned into a chime that played the Scale of Olympos, a 7th century Greek pentatonic scale that can't be reproduced on the modern piano. Gary went on to create what he called the Metallophone, a metal version of a wooden vibraphone. As an avid performer and percussionist, Gary knew that he could share the timeless joy of these sounds when he created Woodstock Chimes and allowed people enjoy the beauty and pleasure of this simple instrument without needing any formal training.
In a time when there's an app for everything, there's no replacement, digital or analog, for that breezy, tinkling sound. Woodstock chimes has a full range of zephyr-powered aural pleasures in store for you, from hanging chimes that elicit the gentle ringing of Balinese temple music to simple, tubular chimes that invoke classic melodies and traditional scales. Woodstock's Chimes of Olympos even let you enjoy the 1300-year old scale that started it all. From the metaphysical to the inspirational or just old-fashioned nice, why don't you pick up an instrument that you'll never have to practice and you'll be able to play perfectly every time?
While gentle tintinnabulation may be enough for some people, Woodstock also knows that while a hanging assortment of random shells, sticks and rocks may have been the height of Sumerian home fashion, you might like something a bit more defined and elegant. Styles ranging from the classic lines of Mission furniture to the sleek look of cast and polished metals let you choose the look of your wind-powered accessory. Materials run the gamut from bamboo to bronze to semi-precious stones, so there's no home style or aesthetic taste left out.
At their heart, Woodstock Chimes is focused on creating music, and their line of instruments gives the novice and the expert alike something to enjoy. What child wouldn't want to try out a chimalong, ukulele, or their very own accordion?
Focused on sustainable production and responsible employment practices, Woodstock Chimes is going to make the world a better place, one breezy porch at a time.
